Stokes And Morgan Knock Aussies Out Of Champions Trophy

By on June 10, 2017

England beat Australia by 40 runs (D/L method)

Chasing 277, Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten 102 off 109 balls and skipper Eoin Morgan made an excellent 81-ball 87. The game was called off with 58 balls to spare when heavy rain made it difficult for further play. England were 240-4 at that stage.

Australia started brilliantly with the ball by dismissing Jason Roy 4(2), Alex Hales 0(4) and Joe Root 15(14) inside six overs.

It looked like the Kangaroos would script a win with Jos Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc bowling with all guns blazing. But a slight rain interruption helped the momentum swung back to England’s favour.

After the rain break, Morgan and Stokes batted with positive intent and never allowed the Aussies to come back into the game.

The duo played some delightful shots all around the ground until Stokes sold Morgan down the river and Adam Zampa’s direct hit caught the England captain short at the striker’s end.

Earlier in the day, Mark Wood and Adhil Rasheed picked up 4 wickets apiece and England restricted Australia to 277-9. For Australia, Aaron Finch 68(64), skipper Steven Smith 56(77) and Travis Head 71*(64) scored half-centuries.

The Aussies were in a commanding position till 42nd over with Head and Maxwell at the crease. However, the latter departed soon after for 20 off 31 balls, thanks to a superb catch at the boundary by Jason Roy off Wood.

Then Rashid took three wickets quickly and that dent Australia in the death overs but Head’s exploits help Australia to reach 277-9 in 50 Overs.
