Bhuvi, Dhoni save India after Dananjaya’s scary spell
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s unbeaten 53 and MS Dhoni’s 45* gave India a 3-wicket win in a close contest. India collapsed from 109-0 in 15.3 overs to 131-7 in 21.5 overs thanks to Akila Dananjeya’s 6 wickets in no time. However, Bhuvi and Dhoni shared a 100-run stand and chased down the target of 231 (adjusted per DLS method).
Rohit Sharma was in stellar touch and hit sixes and fours with ease, all grace. He scored 54 off 45 balls. Shikhar Dhawan continued his purple patch and made 49 off 50 balls.
Dananjeya rattles Indian top order
As the visitors were cruising, Dananjeya trapped Rohit lbw. Six balls later, Angelo Mathews took a blinder to dismiss Dhawan. Kedhar Jadhav couldn’t pick Dananjaya’s Googly and was bowled, K L Rahul and Virat Kohli also departed in the same fashion in the same over.
Hardik Pandya was stumped when he stepped down the track to hit Danenjaya. Axar Patel was the next one to go, trapped lbw by the 24-year-old spinner to leave India at 131-7.
Bhuvi, Dhoni rebuilds
Bhuvneshwar Kumar who had a career ODI average of 9.45 (before the match) joined Dhoni in the middle. The duo gave respect to the opposition and played with caution.
Bhuvi was very watchful while Dhoni was calm and tried to take the game to deep. Bhuvi was 18 off 59 balls when he smashed Mirinda Siriwardana for a six and thereafer he found boundaries at regular intervals.
Dhoni was content to play second fiddle. Sri Lankan skipper Upul Tharanga brought Dananjeya back to the attack in the final overs but was less effective then. In the meantime, Bhuvi notched up his maiden ODI fifty.
India reached the target in 44.3 overs when Vishwa Fernando bowled a wide down the leg side. The delivery made sure that there was no cliche dialog “Dhoni finishes off in style”.
Dickwella impresses yet again
Earlier in the day, Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bowl first. Niroshan Dickwella who scored 64 in the last match, started well again by making 31 off 24 balls. The left-handed batsman moved around the crease, played wonderfully. He along with Danushka Gunathilaka (19) put together 41 in 7.4 overs before Jasprit Bumrah accounted the wicket of Dickwella courtesy sharp catch by Dhawan.
Yuzvendra Chahal (2-43) and Axar Patel (1-30) bowled well in middle overs and kept the run rate in check. The tight bowling meant he hosts lost wickets in quick sucession and were struggling at 121-5 in 28.3 overs when Angelo Mathews (20 off 41) perished.
Siriwardana and Kapugedera rescues after wickets fell in a heap
Siriwardana batted with positive intent and scored a run-a-ball 58. The southpaw added 91-runs with Chamara Kapugedera (40 off 61) who was playing his 100th ODI.
Bumrah employed a brilliant death over spell and claimed the wicket of Sirwardana, Kapugedera and Dananjeya. The Mumbai Indians bowler picked up 4 wickets for 43 runs. Sri Lanka managed to score 236-8 in 50 overs.
Danjaneya was awarded Man of the Match for his 6-54 in 10 overs.
